The East Tennessee Heating Tradition

Wood Stoves That Heat for Real — and Stay Legal, Safe & Insurable

A good wood stove is the most honest heat there is: fuel you can see, fire you can hear, and warmth that keeps radiating after the flames go down. Around here — from Newport mountain homes to Tri-Cities neighborhoods — plenty of families heat with wood the old way. The difference between a stove that hums along for thirty years and one that's a hazard usually comes down to the install: hearth protection, wall clearances, connector piping, and a listed chimney.

Our installs follow the appliance manual to the letter — floor and wall clearances to the listing, proper hearth pad dimensions, single-wall-to-listed-chimney transitions done right, and the flue sized for a wood-burning appliance. Then we document it all: photos, clearances, and the venting path, so your installer's work stands up to any inspector or insurance agent who ever asks.

We install wood stoves only — no gas or pellet appliances.

  • Hearth pads sized and rated per the stove listing
  • Wall & ceiling clearances documented in photos
  • Listed chimney systems (Class A) where no masonry exists
  • Stainless liner connections to existing masonry chimneys

Know The Warning Signs

Where Wood Stoves Earn Their Keep

Homes like these are why we install so many stoves.

High Heating Bills

Zone-heating with wood in the spaces you actually use is the fastest way to soften the winter bill.

Rural & Cabin Properties

Long power outages and long driveways make stoves the backup heat East Tennessee trusts.

Cold, Well-Used Rooms

The addition, basement den, or lake house that the main system never quite reaches.

An Old Stove That's Past Its Prime

Pre-1990 stoves burn dirty and inefficient — a modern listed stove is a whole different machine.

An Unused Fireplace Chimney

A sound masonry chimney plus a new liner makes a natural, listed vent path for a stove.

You Want It Done Right

Stove installs gone wrong are a leading ignition source — this is not the job to guess at.

Clearances, Hearths & Chimneys — By the Book

NFPA 211 sets the table for solid-fuel appliances: listed hearth extensions, wall and ceiling clearances per the manufacturer's listing, and a chimney (or listed chimney system) appropriate to the stove. Every install we do is documented against those requirements, photo by photo.

Why It Matters

Why Homeowners Go Stove

Serious Heat

A mid-size stove can carry 1,500–2,500 sq ft in Tennessee's mild-to-cold winters.

Outage-Proof Warmth

Ice storm knocks the power out? The stove doesn't notice — and neither will you.

Clean Modern Burns

Today's listed stoves burn far cleaner than granddad's — less smoke, less wood, less creosote.

Fuel You Control

Local firewood, your stacking schedule, heat that doesn't arrive as a surprise bill.

How It Works

From Stove Box to First Burn

1

Plan the Placement

Clearances, floor protection, and vent path — we plan the install around your room, not the other way around.

2

Install & Connect

Hearth, stove, connector, chimney/liner — set to the listing, sealed and supported right.

3

Test Burn & Train

First fire together: draft check, loading technique, and the maintenance schedule that keeps it safe.

Common Questions

Wood Stove Installation FAQs

Can I vent a wood stove into my existing masonry chimney?
Usually yes — if the chimney is structurally sound and gets a stainless liner sized to the stove. Venting a stove into a full-size unlined or damaged flue is how draft problems, creosote, and CO trouble start. The camera inspection before install answers this definitively for your chimney.
What's a hearth pad and do I really need one?
It's the listed floor protection under and around the stove — non-combustible, sized per the manufacturer's listing (typically extending 16″+ in front of the door where sparks and coals land). Yes, you need one: it's a code requirement and the reason an ember that rolls out of the door doesn't become a floor fire.
How far does a wood stove need to sit from the wall?
Per the stove's listing — typically 8″ to 36″ depending on the model and whether the wall is protected. Every model differs; the manual governs. We measure, document, and if you want the stove closer, we install listed wall shielding that the manual allows.
Do I need a permit for a wood stove in Tennessee?
Requirements vary by county and city, but stove installs generally need a mechanical permit and an inspection in most East Tennessee jurisdictions. We build to the code inspectors test against and provide the documentation package your office asks for — call us with your county and we'll walk you through it.
How do I choose a stove size?
Bigger isn't better — an oversized stove gets choked down to low smolder burns that make creosote fast. We size by your actual heated space and climate zone, then recommend two or three models that fit your firebox needs, style, and budget. You'll see the listing specs before you buy anything.
