True Masonry, Not Masonry-Looking

East Tennessee's Old Chimneys Are Worth Saving

The chimneys around here weren't mass-produced — they were laid up by masons who mixed mortar by hand, selected stone from local quarries, and built for homes that would stand a century. Knoxville's historic districts, the older mill neighborhoods of the Tri-Cities, the stone work on ridge homes in Cocke County — these chimneys are part of what makes a home feel like it belongs here.

Restoring them right is a different discipline from new construction. It means matching brick by size, color, and firing; using lime-forward mortars soft enough for old masonry so the wall keeps breathing and flexing as it was built to; and repairing coursing and joint profiles so a patch doesn't telegraph across the façade. We treat every historic chimney like the original mason is going to walk by and inspect our work.

  • Historic lime mortar matching (never hard Portland in soft masonry)
  • Salvage brick sourcing and color matching
  • Stone chimneys: re-pointed, cracked units replaced, coursing preserved
  • Repairs weather to match — not stand out

Know The Warning Signs

What Aging Masonry Looks Like

Every one of these is repairable — caught in time.

Receded or Missing Mortar

Joints weathered back past the brick face leave the wall relying on... nothing. Re-pointing restores integrity.

Cracked or Spalling Brick & Stone

Units losing faces or split by freeze-thaw need replacement — matched to the original layout.

Deteriorated Crown & Wash

The concrete "wash" on top of a stone chimney often fails first — water then enters vertically.

Opened Corners & Step Cracks

Stairstep cracks along mortar lines mean settlement or thermal movement — stabilize before it spreads.

Old Repairs Gone Wrong

Portland patches and painted brick from past decades trap moisture and accelerate damage. We undo them properly.

It's Just Tired

A century of weather softens even good masonry — a full repointing adds decades of life for a fraction of rebuild cost.

Historic Look, Modern Safety

We keep the original character while meeting NFPA 211's structural and fire-safety requirements: sound, sealed masonry; intact liner; proper clearances. Old-built and code-right aren't opposites — that's the craft.

Why It Matters

Why Quality Masonry Work Matters

Character Preserved

A matched repair keeps the thing that made the home worth maintaining in the first place.

Structure Restored

Re-pointed joints return the stack to full bearing capacity — sound and stable.

Water Managed

Tight joints, sound crown, breathable treatment: the water cycle finally breaks.

Decades Cheaper

Periodic repointing costs a small fraction of the rebuild it delays by 30+ years.

How It Works

How Restoration Projects Run

1

Survey & Match

Document every failing area, source the matched materials, and approve the sample before work begins.

2

Restore

Old joints raked clean, units replaced, new mortar placed to match profiles — by hand.

3

Cure & Protect

Proper curing time, then breathable protection if wanted. Photos at every milestone.

Common Questions

Masonry Chimney Repair FAQs

Why can't you use modern mortar on my 1920s chimney?
Because modern Portland cement mortar is stronger and harder than the soft brick it surrounds. Masonry walls manage moisture and movement by letting mortar flex and sacrifice itself slightly. Hard mortar shifts that stress into the brick — faces pop off, joints crack around rigid points. On historic masonry we use softer, lime-forward mortars that behave like the original. This single choice decides whether the repair lasts decades or two winters.
Can you match the original stone on my chimney?
Usually yes. Our region has active sources for Tennessee fieldstone, Crab Orchard-style sandstone, and limestone, plus salvage yards for rare units. We match by bed color, grain, and tooling pattern. You'll approve the actual material sample before anything touches the chimney.
Is tuckpointing worth it, or should I rebuild?
If the structural units (brick/stone) are sound and the failure is in the joints, re-pointing restores the wall for a fraction of rebuild cost — and done right, it protects the units that made the chimney worth saving. When units themselves have failed through 30%+ of the stack, the economics flip toward rebuilding. The camera + hands-on inspection tells you which side of that line you're on.
How long does re-pointing last?
Correctly matched mortar, properly raked and packed joints, on a water-managed chimney: 25 to 50+ years in our climate. The chimneys we're re-pointing today were often last touched in the 1970s.
Should I have my old chimney cleaned before repair?
If it's painted or stained, yes — carefully. We use gentle chemical and low-pressure methods. Never sandblast or pressure-wash old brick: both strip the fired face off the unit, and once that skin is gone the brick deteriorates continuously. Any "cleaner" who suggests blasting an old chimney should be shown the door.
