Fixed Right, Not Patched Over

Chimney Repairs That Address the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

A chimney lives a brutal life: it stands above the roofline taking every rainstorm, hard freeze, and July sun East Tennessee sends, all while carrying 500°F+ gases through a masonry column that was never meant to flex. Sooner or later, something gives. Crowns crack, mortar joints open, flashing rusts, flue tiles shift.

The difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails in two winters is whether the actual cause got fixed. Water enters through a hairline crown crack, freezes, and pops a mortar joint 18 inches below — patch the joint and you've treated the symptom while the crack keeps feeding it. Our techs trace damage back to its entry point, photograph it, and repair the whole failure chain with materials rated for the job.

  • Every repair starts with a camera or visual inspection — no blind fixes
  • Mortar matched to your chimney's era and composition
  • Masonry-grade sealants and materials rated for heat and UV
  • Photos before, during, and after every repair

Know The Warning Signs

Signs Your Chimney Needs Repair

Water stains and loose brick never fix themselves.

Crumbling Mortar Joints

Receded, sandy, or missing mortar between bricks means moisture is inside the wall — tuckpointing stops it.

Water Stains on Ceilings or Walls

Stains near the chimney usually mean flashing or crown failure — track it down before the rafters rot.

Spalling or Loose Brick

Bricks that flake, pop their faces, or wiggle mean freeze-thaw damage is working through the stack.

Cracked Crown

The concrete cap on top of your chimney cracks from heat cycling and weather — water pours straight in.

Loose, Rusted, or Missing Cap

No cap means rain, animals, and sparks have an open invitation into your flue.

Debris in the Firebox

Mortar chips and tile fragments raining into the firebox are the chimney telling you something above is failing.

Repairs Done to Standard

NFPA 211 doesn't just govern inspections — it sets the fire-safety requirements for chimney construction, materials, and repair methods. Every repair we make follows the standard's material and clearance rules, so the system works as one designed unit, not a patchwork.

What We Do

Common Repairs We Handle

  • Tuckpointing and mortar joint restoration

  • Firebox and smoke chamber parging

Why It Matters

Why Repair Now Beats Replacing Later

Stop Water at Entry

Every repaired crack is gallons of water kept out of masonry, attic, and framing.

Protect the Liner

Movement and moisture crack flue tiles; stable masonry keeps the liner sound.

Small Now, Serious Later

A minor crown repair ignored becomes a major rebuild — the damage curve only bends one way.

Home Value Intact

A leaning, crumbling chimney is the first thing buyers photograph from the driveway.

Common Questions

Chimney Repair FAQs

How do I know if a crack is serious?
Location and width tell the story. Hairline crown cracks are common and worth sealing early — they're how water gets in. Flue tile cracks are a use-stopping safety issue. Masonry cracks wider than a nickel, stairstepping through mortar joints, or leaning stacks are structural. When in doubt, get eyes (and a camera) on it.
Can you match my existing brick and mortar?
In most cases, yes. East Tennessee has good salvage-brick sources and compatible modern alternatives, and we match mortar color, texture, and hardness — critical because hard mortar next to soft old brick pushes moisture into the brick and accelerates spalling.
My chimney only leaks around heavy rain. Is that flashing?
Usually, but not always. Rain-driven leaks come from four spots in order of likelihood: the flashing, the crown, the cap (or lack of one), and masonry pores. Our leak diagnostic traces the water path instead of guessing — see our chimney leak repair page for the full rundown.
How long do chimney repairs take?
Caps: an hour. Crown repair: half a day. Tuckpointing: one to two days. Firebox rebuilds: two to four days. Masonry needs curing time before paint or sealant — we tell you the full schedule, weather included, up front.
Will you use the right mortar for my older chimney?
Always — modern Portland cement mortars are too hard for pre-1930s chimneys. On historic masonry we use softer, lime-forward mortars that let the wall breathe and move as it was built to. It's a small detail that decides whether a repair lasts a decade or fails in two winters.
